You walk out to your car and find a dent โ a shopping cart, a hailstorm, or a careless door swing in a parking lot. Before you assume it means a costly repaint and days in the shop, there's a good chance paintless dent repair (PDR) can fix it faster and for far less money.
How PDR Works
Paintless dent repair is a technique where a skilled technician uses specialized metal rods and body picks to gently massage a dent from behind the panel, gradually pushing the metal back to its original shape. There's no filler, no sanding, and no repainting involved.
The process requires access to the back of the panel โ usually through a door jamb, window opening, or by removing a trim piece. The technician works slowly and precisely, using light reflection to gauge progress. When done correctly, the result is factory-perfect โ completely undetectable.
PDR vs. Traditional Dent Repair
โ PDR
- No paint or filler used
- Preserves original factory finish
- Faster โ often same day
- Less expensive
- No effect on vehicle resale value
- No risk of mismatched paint color
Traditional Body Repair
- Uses body filler and paint
- Risk of color mismatch over time
- Longer turnaround (days)
- Higher cost
- May affect resale value slightly
- Required for severe damage
When PDR Works โ and When It Doesn't
PDR is highly effective, but it's not suitable for every type of damage. Here's a quick guide:
PDR works well for:
- Hail damage (multiple small dents)
- Door dings from other cars or shopping carts
- Minor creases where the paint is still intact
- Round or smooth dents without sharp edges
- Dents in accessible panel areas
PDR may NOT work for:
- Dents with cracked, chipped, or scraped paint
- Sharp, angular creases
- Dents on panel edges or body lines
- Very large or deep dents where metal has stretched significantly
- Rust-affected areas
Not sure if your dent qualifies for PDR? Bring it in โ our technicians will assess it for free and give you an honest recommendation. Sometimes what looks like a traditional repair job is actually a perfect PDR candidate.
Does Insurance Cover PDR?
Yes โ in most cases. If your vehicle has comprehensive coverage, hail damage and other dents caused by events beyond your control are typically covered. Your deductible applies, but PDR costs are often low enough that many customers choose to pay out of pocket to avoid a claim and keep their premiums down.
For parking lot dings from an identified driver, you can file against their liability insurance. Our team handles the claim coordination either way.
How Long Does PDR Take?
A single door ding can often be repaired in 30โ90 minutes. Hail damage with many dents across the whole vehicle may take 1โ3 days depending on severity. Either way, it's significantly faster than traditional bodywork, which can take several days for painting and curing alone.
