Kia or Hyundai Stolen or Broken Into in LA? What to Do Next

A practical guide for Los Angeles drivers: what to do first, what damage to expect, and how to get your car repaired.

Why Kias and Hyundais are targeted

Certain 2011–2022 Kia and Hyundai models were built without an engine immobilizer β€” a chip that stops the car from starting without the right key. Around 2021, videos showing how to start these cars with a USB cable spread on social media. Thieves remove the steering column cover and turn the ignition. Los Angeles saw an 85% increase in Kia and Hyundai thefts in 2022 (NPR / LAist).

Step 1: Stay safe and report it

  • If your car is missing, call the police and file a report. You will need the report number for insurance.
  • If the car was recovered or broken into, take photos of all damage before anything is moved or cleaned.
  • Do not drive the car if the steering column or ignition is damaged. Call for a tow β€” our towing to the shop is free.

Step 2: Call your insurance

Theft and vandalism damage is usually covered under comprehensive coverage, minus your deductible. Liability-only policies normally do not cover it. Ask your insurer what your policy includes. You can choose any licensed repair shop β€” California law gives you that right.

Step 3: Know the typical damage

  • A broken window, often a rear side window
  • A damaged or destroyed steering column and ignition
  • Scratches, dents and broken parts from the theft or joyriding
  • Interior damage and missing personal items

Step 4: Be ready for parts delays

When thefts peaked, many owners waited months for repairs. Steering column parts were among the hardest to find (Good Morning America, April 2023). Ask your shop which parts are needed and how long they may take, and ask your insurer about rental car coverage.

Step 5: Get the free anti-theft upgrade

Kia and Hyundai offer a free anti-theft software upgrade at their dealers for affected models. In a study by the Highway Loss Data Institute, upgraded cars had 53% fewer theft claims. The study notes the protection works when you lock the car with the key fob β€” so lock it with the fob, not the door handle button.
