Two ways to remove a dent
Not every dent needs paint. We look at the size, depth, location and paint condition, and recommend the method that gives the best result for the lowest cost.
Paintless dent repair (PDR)
With PDR, a technician works the metal back into shape from behind the panel. There is no filler and no repaint, so the original factory finish stays on your car. It is usually faster and less expensive than traditional repair. PDR works best on:
- Door dings and shopping-cart dents
- Hail damage with many small dents
- Round, shallow dents where the paint is not cracked
- Minor creases in panels the technician can reach from behind
Traditional dent repair
When the paint is damaged, the metal is stretched, or the dent is on a sharp edge or body line, PDR may not be possible. In that case we repair the panel with traditional body work and repaint it with a color-matched finish (see Paint & Refinishing).
Not sure which one you need? Bring the car in or send a photo. We will tell you honestly whether PDR will work. Read more in our guide: What is paintless dent repair?
